There is a story in Matthew 8 of a centurion who comes to Jesus about his sick servant.

“When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.”But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.”
(Matthew 8:5-10 ESV)

I have been thinking about this story for several days now because of the faith the centurion has. He understood what authority Jesus carried. He had faith and trust in that authority.

We look at the world and we worry. The economy is close to a recession. People are losing their jobs. We are concerned with the new president ready to take office. We tend to look to our selves and our government to save us from our troubles.

Do we have that faith and trust in what God has promised us?

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
(Romans 8:31-39 ESV)

I originally was going to write a post about sarcasm. The more that I have thought about it, the broader the implications. We are suppose to be intentional in our prayer. We are suppose to be intentional in our Bible study. what about our fellowship? How intentional are we in our daily fellowship with each other?

The church service ends, people mingle out to the lobby and we get a chance to fellowship for a few minutes before we all leave, back to our busy separate lives.

What about in those few minutes each day that you see your husband, wife, kids or other loved ones?

What do you say in those precious few minutes?

I know that more times than not I have some sarcastic witty (maybe), sly dig to zing my friend or brother/sister in Christ. How often has those fallen flat and maybe even caused damage?

I have been thinking a lot lately about the way people use sarcasm and what role does it play in our ability to communicate with each other.

The world seems to love sarcasm. Most media, especially talk radio and television is based upon sarcasm. If the world is in love with sarcasm, should we as Christians love it too?

We are told we are to encourage and stir each others faith! We also told to bear each other’s burden and to restore those who have fallen in sin.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.  (Hebrews 10:24-25)

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:1-2)

In order for us to do this, it means we need to swallow the sarcasm, take down the facades, put away our defenses, throw away the heart of stone and take hold of the heart of flesh that God promised us. We need to put ourselves out there, willing to be vulnerable. We need to stop looking at our relationships as though they are part of a tv sitcom and start looking at them as the Christ-filled, love-filled relationships they are suppose to be.

A couple thoughts on how we can be more intentional in our fellowship:

  1. Look to see if people are hurting or not?
  2. Tell people how you geniuinely you feel about them?
  3. Dare to reach out and ask for prayer and help when you are in need?

How else can we make our fellowship more intentional and more Christlike?

Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.
C.S. Lewis
The Weight of Glory

Why is it that I find that the mud is far more attractive than the holiday at sea. It is something that I have been reflecting on a lot lately. The things that I want are to be love, to love, and to glorify God. What I do of course the second someone gets close to me, shows me love, shows me that I have value because God gave me value is go dive back into the mud hole just to be able to go “see, I am worthless”. Having strong desires and truly getting them met is very scary to me. I am comfortable in my sin. I feel I deserve my sin. I DESIRE my sin. But the sin is so empty, so meaningless.

The election is over. The candidates that most Christians voted for lost. I think we need to be very careful on how we react. Our ultimate authority is NOT Barak Obama, but God. The world is not going to fall apart (unless God wills it) because of the election of these people. We need to be praying for our new leaders and asking God to be using them to glorify Him.

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.”
(Romans 13:1-2 ESV)

“Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.”
(1Peter 2:13-14 ESV)

People are watching our reaction, if we are bitter and complaining about this election, it may show that we are not putting our faith into our Lord. We need to stop worrying, start praying, and keep our hope focussed on our treasures in heaven.

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hopethat the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”
(Romans 8:18-25 ESV)

Matthew 6 has a lot to say on how our attitude is supposed to be, at all times, but I think especially on a day like today.

Maybe with this election this is a chance for us to become more dependent on God and not depend on institutions of this world to reach out to those we are supposed to.

This is from a letter to a friend, where we have started debating various subjects… One of my goals is to start writing again and this I thought was worth putting on the blog… Hence it is here. I have done my best to protect the innocent

You and I look at the world and our Christian lives in radically different ways. You look at the world as an academic, trying to find the perfect and correct interpretation of the Bible. Your job is to read, rate, debate and compare various interpretations and various concepts of theology.  My pastor, by his own admission is a life long learner, he reads everything and runs it through his “biblical grid” hoping to grow, be challenged, and have enough discernment to recognize what doesn’t seem to line up with his  understanding of Scripture (I stole this from an email of his). I am very different from both of you. I am a very desperate, and often pathetic  person trying to learn enough to fight against the flesh, sin and the devil for the life God promises us. Not a life of happiness, but a life of purpose, joy and value serving God. You may say we all are like that, my response to that is some more than others. Between my depression, purity issues and my absolute belief that the Christian life is the ONLY way to live, I will be fighting the rest of my life. God tells me that everyday. There are so many people out there we must reach, but I find often that it is a rarity that I can get past my own issues to reach out beyond my own self. I need to learn truths (weapons) that I can fight against the world, flesh and the devil against. I need the tools to help bring people to Christ. One of the reasons that I had to back away from you is that you through your academic passion took away men such as Piper, and Bridges that helped me become stronger in my faith. You told me they were wrong about certain subjects, so that meant they were not worth considering on any subject, (in your view). Then at the same time I had others at my church urging caution on the authors that you recommended.

My first views of Christianity came from very radical places. One of my first glimpses of God came from a series of junk fiction books called “The Year of the Ninja Master”. It gave me the first taste of falling and redemption. One of the other books that strongly influenced my life was the book, “The Last Temptation of Christ”. This book was extremely controversial for several reasons, which at this time I will skip. This book showed me several things, the Christian life is not easy, Jesus suffered terribly, and thirdly he was tempted in every way and yet remained sin free. The movie and book helped me visualize these things. I understood what Hebrews 4:14-15 was saying (“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:14-15 ESV). Neil Anderson taught me about Christian identity. John Piper, has helped me see God for how awesome he is and have shown me how to live the Christian life.  Jerry Bridges, has taught me a lot about the seriousness of sin and how grace and holiness work together. John MacArthur has taught me quite a bit about living the Christian life. Craig Muri and Dennis Wilkinson have helped me keep the awe of God in front of my eyes and have personally helped me grow as a Christian. And as we grow in friendship I know you will have an influence. God used each one of these men to shape my Christian view, as he had used people like Ryrie, Stanford and Nee to shape your life. My point is that all these men have value in there theology, for me I MUST grab hold of everything that helps me fight against the world and use it and pray that God will give me discernment to see what is right and what is not (He already has by showing me flaws in Anderson’s theology and yet Anderson’s view of identity STRONGLY helps me even today. His teachings on identity is stronger than anything else that I have seen, and believe me I am looking). In other words let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. These men have value in some of what they say. What man besides Jesus himself (and maybe the apostles) has it all right?

God needs men today -

  • Men who will stand before His face and hear His voice daily,
  • Men who have no desire in their heart for anyone or anything other than God Himself,
  • Men who fear Him so greatly that they hate sin in every form and love righteousness and truth in all their ways,
  • Men who have overcome anger and sexually sinful thoughts, and who would rather die than sin even in thought or attitude,
  • Men whose daily lifestyle is one of taking up the cross and pressing on to perfection, and who are constantly working out their own salvation with fear and trembling,
  • Men, full of the Holy Spirit, who are so rooted and grounded in love that nothing can ever move them into an unloving attitude towards another human being, however great the provocation,
  • Men who are so rooted and grounded in humility that neither human praise nor spiritual growth, neither a divinely endorsed ministry nor anything else will be able to make them lose the awareness of their being less than the least of all the saints,
  • Men who have an understanding of God’s nature and purpose through His word, and who tremble at that word so that they will not disobey even the smallest commandment or neglect to teach it to others,
  • Men who will proclaim the whole counsel of God and expose religious harlotry and unscriptural human traditions,
  • Men who have the revelation of the Holy Spirit on the secret of godliness, on Christ having come in the flesh and opened a new and living way through the flesh,
  • Men who are diligent and hard-working, but who also have a sense of humour, and know how to relax and play with children and enjoy God’s good gifts in nature,
  • Men who are not ascetics, but who at the same time live a disciplined life and who are not afraid of hardships,
  • Men who have no interest in expensive clothing or sight seeing and who will not waste their time in unprofitable activities or their money in unnecessary purchases,
  • Men who have mastered their desire for fancy foods and who are not enslaved to music or sport or any other legitimate activity,
  • Men who have been disciplined successfully by God in the fires of affliction, abuse, tribulations, false accusation, physical sickness, financial hardships and opposition from relatives and religious leaders,
  • Men full of mercy, who can sympathise with the worst of sinners and the worst of believers, and have hope for them, because they consider themselves to be the foremost of all sinners,
  • Men who are so deeply rooted in the security of the love of their Heavenly Father that they are never anxious about anything, or afraid of Satan or evil men or difficult situations or anything,
  • Men who have entered into God’s rest, believing in the sovereign working of God in all matters for their best and who therefore give thanks always for all men, for all things and in all circumstances,
  • Men who find their joy in God alone and who are therefore full of the joy of the Lord, having overcome all bad moods,
  • Men of living faith, who have no confidence in themselves or their natural abilities, but complete confidence in God as their unfailing Helper in all situations,
  • Men who live, not by the promptings of their own reason, but by the leading of the Holy Spirit,
  • Men who have been genuinely baptized in the Holy Spirit and fire by Christ Himself (and not just thrilled by some emotional counterfeit or convinced by some theological argument),
  • Men who live constantly under the anointing of the Spirit, endowed with the supernatural gifts that He has given them,
  • Men who have revelation of the church as the body of Christ (and not a congregation or a denomination), and who give all their energies, their material wealth and spiritual gifts to build that church,
  • Men who have learnt to bridle their tongues through the help of the Holy Spirit and whose tongues are now aflame with the divine Word,
  • Men who have forsaken all, who are not attracted any more to money or material things, and who desire no gifts from others,
  • Men who can trust God for all their earthly needs and who never hint about their material needs or boast about their labours, either in their conversation or through letters and reports,
  • Men who are not stubborn, but gentle, and open to criticism and eager for correction from older and wiser brothers,
  • Men who have no desire to dominate or advise others (although ready to give advice, when asked for), and who have no longing to be considered as ‘elder’ brothers, or leaders, but who only desire to be ordinary brothers and servants of all,
  • Men who are easy to get along with, and who are willing to be inconvenienced and taken advantage of by others,
  • Men who will make no distinction between the millionaire and the beggar, the white-skinned and the dark-skinned, the intellectual and the idiot, and the cultured and the barbarian, but who will treat them all alike,
  • Men who will never be influenced by their wife, children, relatives, friends or other believers to cool off even slightly in their devotion to Christ or their obedience to God’s commandments,
  • Men who can never be bribed to compromise by any reward that Satan may offer (whether honour or money or whatever),
  • Men who are fearless witnesses for Christ, fearing neither religious heads nor secular heads,
  • Men who desire to please no human being on the face of the earth, and who are willing to offend all men, if necessary, in order to please God alone,
  • Men for whom God’s glory, God’s will and God’s kingdom always take priority over mere human need and their own comfort,
  • Men who cannot be pressurised either by others or by their own reason into doing ‘dead works’ for God, but who are eager and content to do the revealed will of God for their lives alone,
  • Men who have the discernment of the Spirit to distinguish between the soulish and the spiritual in Christian work,
  • Men who look at things from a heavenly view point and not an earthly one,
  • Men who will refuse all earthly honours and titles offered them for their labours for God,
  • Men who know how to pray without ceasing, and also how to fast and pray when needed,
  • Men who have learned to give generously, cheerfully, secretly and with wisdom,
  • Men who are willing to be all things for all men, so that by all means they might save some,
  • Men who have a longing to see others not only saved but also made disciples of Christ, and brought to the knowledge of the truth and to obedience to all of God’s commandments,
  • Men who have a longing to see a pure testimony established for God in every place,
  • Men who have a burning passion to see Christ glorified in the church,
  • Men who do not seek their own in any matter,
  • Men with spiritual authority and spiritual dignity,
  • Men who will stand alone for God in the world, if need be,
  • Men who are totally uncompromising, like the apostles and prophets of old.

God’s work in the world suffers today, because such men are few in number. Determine with all your heart that you will be such a man for God, in the midst of a sinful and adulterous generation and a compromising Christendom. Since there is no partiality with God, it is possible for you too to be such a man, provided you yourself earnestly desire to be one. Since God demands commitment and obedience only in the conscious area of one’s life, it is possible for you to be such a man, even though the conscious area of your life may be limited. (That area will keep increasing as you walk in the light and press on to perfection). There is no excuse then why you cannot be such a man. Since nothing good dwells in the flesh, we have to seek for grace from God to have the virtues listed above. Cry out to God daily then, that He will give you grace to be such a man in these, the closing days of the age.

“Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”” ?(Luke 18:25 NIV-G/K) ??“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. ?(1Corinthians 1:18 NIV-G/K) ??There is a question that have been repeatedly going through my mind in the last several days. ??Do I need a Savior? ??I have been thinking a lot about the verses above and how it not only relates to those that are not Christians but it relates to us, who are Christians as well, maybe even more so. ??If we need food, we drive to mcdonalds. ?If we need money, we get out our credit card. ?If we are bored, we turn on our televisions and computers. ?If we hurt, we go to the doctor. ?If we are depressed we take a prozac. ??In our society we worship wealth, power, and strength. We prize people who are independent and can solve their own problems. People are suppose to be self-sufficient. ??If you look at my upbringing, I lived in a house where we always had food, always had television (actually we had 6 or 7). If we are strong enough, if we are smart enough, if we had enough money, there is not a problem that cannot be solved. I understand perfectly well why my parents and sisters do not feel they need a savior. My family believes they have enough money to solve any problem. We are told we need to have self-esteem and that we are to be brave, strong and independent. The world owes us respect, we deserve prosperity and happiness. ??I am not writing this to the non-believers. I am writing this for myself. I am writing this to my brothers and sisters in Christ. We think to ourselves, “life is good”. we go to work or school, we come home, we watch television every night, we worship at church, we go to bible studies, we participate where needed. we have people who love us, we have plenty of food on the table, oh sure there are problems, but they are minor. We do all the right things in all the right ways and we just cruise along thinking God is blessing us and all is well. The enemy has brainwashed us into believing we are self-sufficient. ??What do our testimonies say? What do our lives say? Do we need a savior? I think that it would be very easy to exchange the word rich for the concept of being self-sufficient. Self-Sufficiency closes the door on God, our savior and puts us exactly where the enemy wants us. Alone and vulnerable. ??A decision needs to be made: Who is in control? God or us? ??Being a God fearing; Christ loving Christian is contradictory to being self-sufficient. God doesn’t need our help. God wants us to totally depend on Him. Our walk with Christ is counter-intuitive to the world. God calls us to: ??•Trust in him (Proverbs 3:5) ?•Depend on Him for our needs (Matthew 6:25-34) ?•Bring our broken heart and spirit to Him (Psalm 51:17) ?•God is our refuge and strength (Psalm 46 1-3) ?•Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you (Psalm 55:22) ?(And many other verses) ??Do we live a life of self-sufficiency or God-dependency? ??Please let me know what you think? Am I thinking right or am I just insane? What am I missing?

I finally broken free. I finally escaped the lies that have kept me in bondage over the last month. It shouldn’t surprise me how easily I get snared by the lies the enemy tells me. I know the enemy. I should know better. Actually they aren’t lies they are truth, the master manipulator can use the Bible against us if we forget the whole truth.

The lies are simple for me to believe. What the enemy tells me (I am paraphrasing for the sake of decency and possibly clarity):
I am of the darkness
I am worth nothing
No matter what I do I will never be holy enough to be seen by God
I don’t deserve God’s forgiveness.
I turn away from God/I am an enemy of God
My life is leading to death/I should be dead

What right do I have to write about God? None!

Over and over the Bible talks about how unworthy man is and how we deserve God’s wrath. The enemy is right.

BUT

The enemy forgets… Sooner or later the whole truth comes out. Sooner or later his lies are exposed.

John 8:32And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”Romans 3:19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. 21 But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished — 26he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

Ephesians 2:3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved. 6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

The enemy is right I am of the darkness, I don’t deserve God’s love. My life of sin leads me to death and then the rest of the truth comes out.

I am a struggling Christian. I am a fighting Christian. I am not sure which term I appreciate more. My friend says that as a fighting Christian the “action” is more proactive. I struggle to remember the reason for the sacrifice Jesus Christ made. He did not die on the cross to condemn me to the wrath and anger of God. He died on the cross to take the dead and decaying people of the world and to make them alive and seen by the most Holy God. He chose to die on the cross to save a worthless, self-destructive person and gave him life.

Two of the books I have read most in the Bible are Romans 7 and 8. Romans 7 talks about the battle between the flesh which is worldly and the mind which is spiritual. I appreciated and found comfort in the fact that the great apostle Paul took the time to write about the war within him the war between his flesh and his spirit. Near the end of the book , verse 7:24 Paul cries out O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” This is where the enemy wants to leave us. He wants to leave us in abject misery.

Paul goes on:
25I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin. Romans 8:1There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

Paul ends chapter 7 laying out the struggle of the Christian life and reminds us of the victory that Jesus Christ has won for us. A victory that he won and gave to us as a gift, which we flat out don’t deserve. Chapter 8 really explains what was won for us unworthy people. Christ freed us from the bondage of living in everlasting sin and brought us closer to our Father. He changed the relationship with God from Fearful Judge to loving Father.

The enemy wants us to believe that we are condemned to live a life of endless failure and decay, driving ourselves into deeper and deeper perversion. The truth is that there is a light out of the darkness. There is a pathway to true life, the life our Creator meant for us. A life with him.

I spent my whole life looking for something…
Looking for answers
Looking for purpose
Looking for love
Looking for solutions
Looking for Reason
Looking for Love
I know where to look now…

All I have to do is look up to my Father in Heaven,
my Savior, my King, the Lord in Heaven.

I just wonder why it is so hard to remember…
